A sequel to 'Muni' made many raise their eye-brows. At a time when the first part itself witnessed a mediocre response in the box-office, the purpose of doing a part-two did pave way to many doubts.
However, actor-director Lawrence Raghavendra has taken it in his stride making the film, loaded with fun and thrills. His hard work is visible but the question that ponders our mind is whether it ends up as an engaging fare.
To ensure that those who missed out Muni, Lawrence has revisited the first part, taken the same set of characters and tried to inject more pace. He goes on a rampage with them. A horror film ought to touch spirits and ghosts, their vengeance and so does 'Kanchana'.
Raghava (Raghava Lawrence) is a happy-go-lucky young man. He plays cricket and is the darling of everybody. But, the problem with him is he is so afraid of darkness and ghosts. His beloved mother (Kovai Sarala) lends a helping hand whenever the hero goes crazy about those scary things.
And, the ghosts play a game here while Raghava plays cricket. Three ghosts enter Raghava’s house along with the blood stained stumps he takes home in. The ghosts for their part play some scary acts (sometimes they do scare us) and enter the body of Raghava. He behaves abnormally, like a transgender.
With the help of a Muslim big-man the family discovers a story behind the ghost Kanchana that has now taken charge of Raghava’s life. The flash back…
Kanchana was a transgender (Sarathkumar), who helps another poor transgender girl in her studies. Kanchana and the family are killed by an MLA (Devan) in a land dispute.
The same Kanchana is now in the body of Raghava ready to take revenge against her killers. Whether the ghost Kanchana (Raghava) took revenge or not forms the climax of the film.
Raghava Lawrence has definitely taken a big risk. And he succeeds in his efforts. The expressions on his face as haunted man are nicely done. He romances well, dances well and, well… does some comedy also!
Sarath kumar is a big surprise element in the movie. He impresses us as a transgender. Lakshmi Rai is just another addition in the star cast. Kovai Sarala again proves that she is the only comedy-queen in present Tamil cinema. Devan sometimes irritates us with his ‘big’ overacts.
Songs and dance sequences always play a big role in Lawrence’s films. Here, he disappoints us. Music is by Thaman, Nothing more to mention at his front. Camera does get its credit. Good work. After his Mass, Style, Muni and Don, this film comes under his writing and direction. To some extent he succeeds.
The film should have been released during May – June, to enthrall the kids and a better box-office collection. Never mind take your kids to the movie. They would enjoy, and you too!
Simply enjoy the movie. Don’t compare it with Hollywood Horrors. A Good entertainer!
